House Renovation

Koshirakura Landscape Workshop

Coordinators: Shin Egashira, AA School of Architecture

Mansuke House was the result of a collaborative workshop in the village of Koshirakura, in Niigata, Japan. Over the course of three weeks, the project explored the relationship between productive landscapes and local building traditions through a series of installations on a 200 year old Japanese house that was damagetd in an earthquake in 2007. Working with the artist Shin Egashira, Maeda Studio, and students from the Architectural Association in London, the work explored unconventional collaborative and pedagogical models centered around material research and site work. Through an analysis of Japanese timber construction, the installations became a way of re-inventing inherited contexts through a series of informal spatial interventions.
